Raphael Mbaegbu

Team Lead, Social Research
Raphael Mbaegbu is the Head of Social Research at NOIPolls, with over 16 years of experience in applied research and programme implementation across democracy and governance, community resilience, peace and conflict, health, agriculture, education and business development.
He previously served as Programme Officer for Research and Strategy Development at the CLEEN Foundation, where he coordinated major nationwide studies, including the National Crime and Victimisation Surveys, and the West African Border Security Surveys. At NOIPolls, Raphael is the Project Manager for the Afrobarometer Surveys in Nigeria, leading the design, implementation, dissemination of results and delivery of all Afrobarometer survey rounds in the country. He was a crucial field leader and research coordinator for the Harvard University criminal justice indicator program in Nigeria.
Over the past decade, he has successfully led numerous large-scale surveys and opinion polls for local and international development organisations, including the International Republican Institute (IRI), DFID, USAID, British Council, MacArthur foundation, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), GIZ, the German Embassy, the World Bank, and the Global Fund health programme, foreign and local universities. His work spans research design, field implementation, data analysis, reporting and policy engagement. He has a sound background in monitoring and evaluation and has published many research papers in reputable outlets.
Raphael has extensive experience managing research-based intervention programmes within the global development framework in Sub-Saharan Africa and has worked closely with diverse project teams, development partners, and national stakeholders. He has undertaken professional research training and courses across Africa, including in South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Senegal. Raphael is an alumnus of Afrobarometer Summer School and Thematic Program at the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Project Development and Implementation from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and another Master’s Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria.
He is also an ardent listener and enthusiast of traditional African music.
